Don’t Be Afraid To Reach For Your Dreams!

life

As a GenYer, I know how hard it is to listen to all the riff raff people have against us. “We demand too much, we don’t have work ethic, we just want everything handed to us! To those calls, I respond “YOU CREATED THIS MONSTER”. And to be honest, thank you. Thank you for telling us that the SKY IS THE LIMIT, READING IS FUNDAMENTAL and that the CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE. Thank you for instilling in us that you want our generation to do better than you all did. But now, TAKE A SEAT!

Ode to NCWO

This is an open letter to the National Council of Women’s Organizations, the organization that I interned with last semester. I learned so much through the staff and experiences that they exposed me to this year was the best semester I ever spent in Southeast DC. I was about to make a change in the way I thought about women’s rights and the issues they face everyday. Now more than ever I know that my mission is to work in these communities.

Nonprofit 2.0: The Good, The Great, The Future!

nonprofit20

This past Friday, I had the pleasure of volunteering at the Nonprofit 2.0 Un-Conference.

According to the website,

“NonProfit 2.0 is more than just a conference on the next generation web. It’s a next generation conference in format. Ever attend a conference for a keynote, and find the rest of the content to be wanting? NonProfit 2.0 delivers the best of both worlds — offering great keynote sessions led by Robert Wolfe, Co-Founder of Crowdrise, and Stacey Monk, Executive Director, Epic Change — but in an unconference way with with no PowerPoint. Instead Nonprofit 2.0 will focus on open questions and dialogue for fantastic conversations. Then from midmorning forward, NonProfit 2.0 shifts into a full-on Unconference.”

It’s a Celebration!: 24 things learned in 24 years

Pics-22

Monday was the day. May 16th. The day I realized that I wasn’t my mother’s little girl anymore.

I was moving closer and closer to adulthood. Long gone are the days of juice boxes and ham sandwiches in the park. These days I wonder what my next bill is going to be due, if this shirt is saying to a potential employer “Can we take her seriously?”, and if I can make that impromptu drive to Philly to see my best friends next week.

Yes, sad I know.

I long for the days of Saturday morning cartoons and playing outside all day until the streetlights came on.

Day 2: Refine Your Blog’s Niche

me20cover
As many of you all know (or don’t know), I’m embarking on a revamp of my brand (site, logo, ideology) and I wanted to keep you all updated on some big and little changes that have been happening with the brand.
I’ve signed up for a challenge hosted by one of my favorite e-mentors (whether she knows it or not), Rosetta Thurman!
Here are 4 questions fromt today’s assignment.
  1. What am I passionate enough about that I could write about it frequently? (passion)
  2. What am I an expert (or want to become an expert) on? (expertise)
  3. Who would find this topic useful or interesting? (audience, market)
  4. What do I want to become known for through my blog ? (reputation/brand)
I am passionate and have expertise in youth development, social media and the non-profit sector. The audience or market that would find this useful are those interested in the above topics listed. While they vary in specific areas and levels of interest, I feel that they still serve a purpose. I want my brand to be known for providing up-to-date, useful and entertaining information.
Be sure to check out the other participants in the challenge at www.bloggingforbranding.com
Stay tuned for more updates!

Me 2.0

Hey All!

It’s been a while, I know. But I’m back with a goodie.

It was recently recommended to me to read Me 2.0: Build a Powerful Brand to Achieve Career Success by Dan Schawbel.

Such a great tool so far in personal branding that I want to weekly or biweekly challenge to revamp my brand.

Personal Branding has many definitions in the PR, social media and marketing world, but I feel that I’ve found the best definition that was put together.

Personal branding, by definition, is the process by which we market ourselves to others. – Dan Schawbel

Short and Sweet. So stay tuned as I revamp my brand!

Volunteerism: A Dying Breed?

volunteer

Hello, Hello…Are you out there?

I recently ran across a old friend of mine who took me back in time to the days of neighborhood clean-ups and tutoring youth at Martha’s table. I remember it like it was yesterday: You picked up trash, planted some flowers and by the end of the day, you got a t-shirt and lunch/snack. I miss those days.

Which brings me to the question: Does anyone still volunteer?

Long gone are the days when you rushed to complete mandated community service for graduation or just for the love of the cause, I’m hoping that this is not a dying breed.

What happened to the passion of my generation? Excuse me if I’m speaking out of place but, I don’t see it. Now, I’m down for volunteering anytime of the year…Not just the major holidays. Many centers need help all throughout the year and sometime fall short of the needed help during the year.

I was always taught that you can’t complain without providing solutions. I hope that the first part of this post inspired someone to get up, get out and do something!

Here’s a listing of some national organizations that need YOUR help all year long:

Donations are down for this organization…if you can, GIVE!

Help a child reach their potential. I regularly mentor young women in city on different topics. It is LIFE CHANGER. If you have the time to spare, I recommend joining this organization.

Once regarded as just something to do on Spring Break, Habitat for Humanity is a great organization to work with. Being able to change lives by securing the roof over a family’s head is one that should be held in high-esteem.

These are just a few of the national organizations I have worked with on numerous occasions that I thought you should take a look at.

Ok, go out and volunteer!
